The first trains crossed the Padma Bridge this week, marking a milestone decades in the making. For millions in the southwestern districts, the journey to the capital has been cut from an uncertain day of ferries and traffic to a few comfortable hours.
Traders in Khulna and Jashore say the change is already visible. Perishable goods that once risked spoiling in long queues now reach Dhaka markets before dawn. Economists estimate the link could add a meaningful share to regional output within a few years.
Officials say the next phase will focus on connecting the line to Mongla port, giving exporters a faster route to the sea. For passengers, though, the meaning is simpler: home is closer than it used to be.
